The Engineering organization within New Build plays a key role in delivering high-quality and efficient solutions across projects and tenders. Through effective planning, management, and use of resources, the function supports safe and predictable project execution and contributes to Aker Solutions’ strategic objectives.
We are now looking for a Principal Layout Engineer to join our Converters & Substations team, with the expectation of being based at our Fornebu office in Norway.
What will you be doing?
As a Principal Layout Engineer, you will act as a Technical Authority within offshore wind substation products at Aker Solutions. As part of the core team, you will combine hands-on layout development with responsibility for defining and advancing competitive layout principles that support constructability and standardization.
You will collaborate with all engineering disciplines, fabrication yards, and T&I teams to deliver integrated, practical, and cost-effective layout solutions that ensure safe and efficient execution. This is a technical leadership role with hands-on involvement, focused on product maturity, design integrity, and cross-discipline integration.
Key Responsibilities:
Technical Authority and Governance
- Act as the Principal/Senior technical authority for layout in the offshore wind substation product group
- Define, maintain, and develop layout philosophies, design principles, and standard solutions
- Ensure correct and consistent application of relevant standards, such as DNV-ST-0145
- Resolve complex technical issues, deviations, and high-risk layout decisions
- Ensure alignment with Aker Solutions’ project execution model and engineering processes
Project Support
- Develop designs from initial concept and mature them up to FEED level
- Provide support to the core team (product development), tender team, and project teams across all phases
- Participate in key technical reviews, design verifications, and constructability reviews
- Support resolution of cross discipline and interface challenges
- Act as the escalation point for high-risk or non-standard layout issues
Quality and Standardization
- Promote lessons learned and continuous improvement in layout practices
- Ensure construction-friendly design principles are applied in 3D models and drawings
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of standard designs and templates
Competence Development
- Maintain a conceptual and open mindset, driving layout improvements
- Mentor and coach senior and junior piping and layout engineers
- Demonstrate willingness to learn, develop, and share knowledge
We think you should have:
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical or a relevant engineering discipline; solid field experience may allow flexibility in formal education requirements
- Extensive experience in HVAC and HVDC layout and design
- Proven track record from concept studies to project execution
- Demonstrated ability to act as a technical authority
Technical Competence
- Deep expertise in piping layout, 3D model development (preferably E3D), and constructability
- Strong knowledge of relevant industry standards
- Solid understanding of interfaces with engineering, substructures, fabrication, and marine activities
Positioning and SeniorityThis role aligns with the Expert level on the professional track and provides technical leadership across product development, tenders, and projects, with accountability for layout quality, constructability, and standardization.
